Soon we discovered this was a pattern in his life. Countless beautiful, Jesus-loving women had failed his perfection test and thus he remained alone. His unrealistic expectations left him always assuming the grass was proverbial greener. I do, however, want to acknowledge how all of us, can from time to time, do the same thing with the church. Sometimes, Christ followers can act like the guy who is waiting for the perfect girl. We hop from one service to another, taking good teaching from one place and incredible worship from the another, without committing our selves to love, give, and serve alongside a community of believers.
He wrote the Christian case against dating. Now he’s splitting from his wife and faith.

The purpose of this book by Joshua Harris is to push the envelope in the area of our passion and commitment to Christ and to the local church that He loves.
By Joshua Harris – Colorado Springs: Multnomah Books Initial confession – it was the small, attractive format of this book which first drew my attention -an A5 sized hardback with large and well spaced font. Then the intriguing title, which seemed a strange combination of relationship guide and church life commentary. Joshua Harris offers a new mindset for discouraged disciples to re-engage with passion and love with their neighbourhood gathering of the Body of Christ — one chapter is subtitled ‘Thinking Globally, Loving Locally’, another ‘Seeing Church from Heaven’s Perspective’.
As this is a short book, I get the impression that Joshua Harris deliberately overstates his case to make a point; here are a selection of quotes which could provoke new insight, lively debate or disgusted disagreement! For anyone who has wondered at times what on earth is God doing in describing us lot gathered together as His bride-to-be, this book provides a summary guide to key verses in the Gospels, Epistles and Revelation which outline God’s intention for the “little ‘c’ church” local and the “big ‘C’ church” global, eternal.
Joshua Harris outlines 3 distinctive, unique, essential ordinances which, he claims, makes a church a church rather than a Christian group, Bible study, or ministry group. I can identify 2 of these ordinances very easily in our Highfields fellowship, and would expect the third to be practised, but it is not so obvious you will have to read the book to find out what the 3 are! The bookstall is located in the entrance foyer at Highfields Church Cathays.

Book Review: Why Church Matters
The title of that book induces panic in people, but in its pages is great truth for young men and women in dating relationships. I recommend it for all young people, high-school and college. I also recommend Boy Meets Girl. Both those books profoundly affected my view of relationships as a young person. Now this book was written in , so its not terribly recent, but it is ever relevant today. Josh is now a pastor of a church in Maryland.
The author is Joshua Harris, a young pastor in Maryland, who writes from two perspectives: he’s now a good churchman, but used to be a bad churchman.

We see in Genesis that God takes a day a week for renewal very seriously. He made Sabbath-keeping one of the Ten Commandments. But if you’re worried that I’m going to try to convince you that Sunday is the new Sabbath for Christians, you’re wrong. I don’t believe that Christians are called to observe the Old Testament laws about Sabbath-keeping. Still I think we’re missing out on enormous personal and spiritual blessings when we treat Sunday like any other day.
Last year, Harris asked his publisher to stop printing the bestselling “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” as well as other books he had written on the topic.
We love Josh and Shannon. It hits home personally. Harris served as senior pastor at Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg from until his resignation in in order to pursue graduate studies at Regent College in British Columbia. Others behaved in ways that violated Christian conscience. For others, it was greed. Harris wrote the best-selling book I Kissed Dating Goodbye , which rejected traditional dating and courtship, and also argued that any physical intimacy before marriage was sinful.
Earlier this month, years after having renounced the message of his book, Harris announced that he and his wife were separating , yet intended to remain friends to help raise their three children. Stop Dating the Church by Joshua Harris calls readers out to wholeheartedly commit to be engaged in a local body of Christ. Josh begins with his personal journey to this commitment, and how his casual views of the importance of the local church changed. In chapter one Josh gives several characteristics of church daters. First, he says they tend to me-centered.
What can the Church do for me? What can I get out of it? What programs and activities are good for me? Second, a church dater is independent. Church daters go to Church because they are supposed to, but are careful so they do not get to close to anyone. They are not focused on the larger purposes of God through the church. Third, church daters tend to be critical of the church.

Harris believes that many, and perhaps even the majority of Christians, have a fear of committment to the church. In Failing to commit to the church, we cheat ourselves, we cheat our church community and we cheat the world. Over the next six chapters, Harris explains the beauty of the church, our need for the church, what committment to a church involves, what to look for in a church, and how to make Sunday the best day of the week.
He draws liberally from the books and teachings of Charles Spurgeon, Don Whitney and John Piper, and builds convincing, biblical arguments. Chapters five and six are particularly engaging. The fifth chapter lays out ten criteria by which to choose a church. The sixth chapter provides some suggestions for redeeming Sunday and restoring it to a place of distinction whereby we use it deliberately as a day to refuel our spiritual batteries.
The men under whose influence he has grown seem to be theologically-sound, showing that he has a true committment to biblical doctrine. There is not much in this book that has not been said elsewhere more thoroughly and perhaps even more convincingly. But what this book adds to the discussion is accessibility. Weighing in at only pages and small pages at that this is a book that can be read and digested in a couple of hours. It will undoubtedly benefit all who read it and I give it my recommendation, especially to young people who are disillusioned by the church and may be turning their backs on her.

Joshua Harris , one of the most prominent leaders of the evangelical purity movement, says he has excommunicated himself from the movement in the months since he first denounced it. Harris, who when he was 21 wrote a book called “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” — in which he encouraged people to avoid all physical touch until marriage, including kissing — spoke out against the chaste movement in an interview with Axios. He told Axios that his book “misled a lot of people,” and he wanted to apologize for it, knowing “you can’t give people [back], you know, years of their life.

I could not put this book down for some very personal reasons. We live in a consumeristic age. So we go through the motions without really investing ourselves. The next chapter is a beautiful picture of the church being his bride, one that is cherished. Jesus is the only person who has the right to disown and give up on the church. But He never has. And He never will.
We cannot pursue godliness or holiness alone. We are living stones in the Temple of His body. In a later blog, I will discuss the last two chapters. Although Harris has plenty of good things to say in his book there are a few weaknesses, especially reading it from a non-American non-Mega Church perspective.
